today, my school hosted an exhibit for suicide awareness day. the exhibit included 1,100 backpacks in representation of the number of lives that are lost to mental illness each year on college campuses. many of these backpacks were donated by the families that lost loved ones and had their stories attached. i’m so proud of my school for bringing attention to such a serious issue.
this matters so much.
Not to be crass, but when faced with a corporate education, bereft of any ACTUAL enrichment, and anywhere between $20,000-$100,000 of student loan debt, paired with a falling economy that doesn’t deliver the jobs those expensive degrees were meant to procure, and a culture built on shame, fear, and hypocrisy, it should come as no surprise that one of the leading causes of death in the United States is suicide.
Awareness is great; change is better. If, as a society, we REALLY want to stop people from committing suicide, we need to develop a culture that gives them MORE reasons to live and LESS reasons to kill themselves.
